What Tipped Us Off
When a potential client called the BBB to look for a review
of Kentropolis, they were told nothing, as they had no complaints on record.
However, one of their salespeople immediately called us to solicit a
membership. We were given the alternative that they could not give any
information on me at all, instead of possibly RECOMMENDING Kentropolis to
potential clients. This is interesting, considering that it is supposedly
against their policy to recommend anyone. In fact, they even share advertising
space on billboards all over town with members.
Their Internet "Seal of Approval"
Yes, it is a seal implying approval, regardless of this also
being against their policy. Adding insult to injury, as a member you must pay
them EXTRA to be listed on their website and even use the seal image. If
membership covers all other advertising media, why the extra charge? Does it
imply a higher level of scrutiny? Read on.
Why Being a Member Means NOTHING
The next time you see their seal of approval, look closely at
the company using it. We have found at least a few of their members, even one
sharing billboard space with the BBB, as having more than questionable ethics
and practices over the years. We saw one site that even accepted credit card
information without a secure server!
Alternatives
In our opinion, the "BBB" is obsolete and has overstayed its
welcome. Entire web communities are devoted to consumer interaction and
reviews of every product and service imaginable. We will not bribe (or be
extorted by) an old-economy organization for preferential treatment.
We stand proud of our firm, and in the light of day.
If a client ever has a problem they do not agree has been resolved fairly, we
not only accept third party arbitration, but if found in the wrong will pay
for such arbitration. Want to check our reputation? We have open records of
who our clients are and potential clients are welcome to contact them.
And THAT'S doing better business than the bureau.
