The Professional and Businessmen Association is a fraternal organization that evolved from local Polonia merchant associations. With roughly half of fellow members being retired or retirement age, I worked uphill with resistance to already common technology and started off with a simple site, updated once or twice per year.
In 2011, emails were available for a quarter of the membership and a list-serv was set up for function reminders and other communication in between the quarterly print newsletter.
A simple, single page done gratis for two years, plus a simple photo gallery the second year. In 2011, the committee took over the site internally as an expanded project.
A worthy cause an associate of mine was involved with, I took on giving Convoy of Care the web presence it deserved without touching their limited budget. Convoy of Care was a yearly summer event in the 90s and early 00s, a parade of tractor-trailors and other vehicles giving rides to handicapped and terminally ill children. The route took them around the Dunkirk / Silver Creek area, and truckers with their ears on would hear about it and detour at the last moment to join in. And I got to use a bullhorn.

Awarded Best Website in the FanForce Awards for the Northeastern United States for two years, this was a truly fun project. It features a bit more graphics and animation work than our typical design work, but it was worth it. Javascript text scrolling and a custom cursor aren’t a good choice for most sites, but are right on target for this one.

With much input from the organization, this has become the most extensive, successful project I’ve worked on. Catherine Lefko, then president of the association, called me in and chose Kentropolis to take over their web presence for one simple reason: they were tired of being billed by the hour for every little change. Charging them the usual yearly maintenance fee for a much smaller site, I regularly swap out sponsors and leadership bios.
After showing them a world of options to make the site an integral part of their groups communications, we developed a discussion board, members-only directory, and interactive membership registration. The functions of the bulletin board are now being migrated to social media (Facebook and LinkedIn) and a WordPress blog, which will also replace their traditional newsletter, Paramount. Events are organized in Google Calendar, and with Facebook are integrated into the main page of the site. The social media portion is now run by another client of ours, Tamara Bigford of BSocial Media LLC.

It was a pleasure expanding my horizons working with a Rwanda national, creating a tourism-style website for the diaspora of Rwandans to come back and visit. Doing a Wordpress setup on their own server, I created a front page with photo slideshow and graphical theme based on the national flag. The rest of the project was taken over by the owner and I advise in an advisory capacity from time to time.
